Can anyone recommend a sealant for
a plastic bung in a plastic drum to hold fuel. Is teflon plumbing tape a good idea or will it break down? what about some sort of sealant, silicone or rtv etc. I'm also looking to add a brass valve assembly in the bung.

Teflon tape would work fine, and should be unaffected by diesel fuel (or just about anything else). Silicone sealant will swell in the presence of fuel or oil. Works fine as a sealant between two mating surfaces, but I wouldn't want a large fuel exposed surface coated with silicone sealant.

our wreckers have "loctite" on the fuel tank drain plugs.
also keeps the dissimilar metals from galling.

Diesel fuel will seep thru teflon tape. The best product I have found is "gasolia". really works well. I used to work for a fuel supplier and most every time a wet spot was found, teflon tape was found above it.
