I remember someone on here a while ago telling how to do this, but I can't find it now. Maybe a stupid question, but, how do you "turn the pump up"? I don't know if I will, but if I decide to, how? Where is that screw? Which way do you turn it? How much?

If the pump is OFF the vehicle, it is really easy - there is a small plate on the side of the pump - yank it off, turn the input shaft until you see what looks like a set screw, and turn it about 1/4 turn CLOCKWISE to put in more fuel at max pedal depression.

If the pump is ON the vehicle, just a bit more complicated. The cover has to come off the top of the pump, then you may have to remove the governor spring and shaft assembly, and you will need a new seal when you reinstall it. You will suck the chamber dry with your turkey baster (clean it up good before Thanksgiving :D ) and see a little window at the bottom of the chamber. Now you need to move the crankshaft until you see the adjustment screw (with a hex socket, like a set screw). When I did this I had all the injectors out, so the engine could not possible start, so I bumped the starter a few times until the screw came into view.

If the injectors and high pressure lines are intact, the engine just might start, and the shut off solenoid will be in the pump cover, over on the workbench. So you will have no way to STOP the engine unless you can cover the intake manifold with a board or something else to choke off ALL the air going to it. So put a socket on the crankshaft pulley bolt, and carefully turn, while your helper looks for the screw head.

Again, 1/4 turn clockwise will give you about all the extra fuel your engine can handle. Cruise around TheDieselPage.com for additional hints.

thanks for the info...sounds like more trouble than it will be worth to me ;-)
But I might try it sometime.
