View Full Version : Diesel Fuel Prices
Can anyone give me a rational explanation WHY diesel prices are $0.60/gal HIGHER than regular? This still doesn't make sense to me...other than perhaps greed. Is it this low sulfur business, or something else? I love my diesel truck, especially when towing, but these prices whack the economics of owning one. I rationalized the extra cost of the diesel by considering the improved mileage. Now with the cost of diesel, I'm no better off than if I bought the 8.1 gasser.

I've been wondering the same thing. Three reasons I can think of off hand...
1. The new ultra low sulfur requirements have the refineries gigging us to pay for investment in new equipment to achieve the ULSD specs.
2. The refineries are cracking diesel to make gasoline and other hydrocarbons.
3. With winter coming, heating oil demand is probably up.

From a previous owner of a 2003 K3500 dually 6.0L gasser - you are much better off. The towing capability was 2/3 at best compared to the 2003 Duramax K2500 that replaced it. The fuel economy towing ~10K loads was 8-9mpg compared to 13-14mpg I now expect to get with this truck and a light footed driver.
As for the relative fuel prices - I have no idea. Blame the Chinese. Blame our oil connected President. Blame me for burning so much diesel up here in Minnesota last year...
What I do know: A gallon of #2 carries about 15% more power producing BTUs than a gallon of regular 98 octane unleaded, and about 30% more than a gallon of 10% ethanol blend. I can't imagine the fuel cost of the gasser truck above burning E-85 or E-100. I would estimate 5-6mpg on the E-85.
Thats alot of CPM (corn per mile), my friend. :)

There are several factors that you have to take into consideration. First is the state and federal tax that is put on diesel. The majority of diesel is used in 18 wheelers which with the weight they haul can damage roads quicker...so states tax them thru higher fuel prices for road maintainance...of course the cost of that is passed onto the consumer at the store or destination. Second, right now our military is burning a butt load of diesel fuel, and most is shipped from the U.S. Last, the relationship of Diesel to heating fuel does play a part...
Here in Norway we pay about 8-9dollar for 1g. 1g=ca 4L
1L diesel = 1.8 dollar Can bee higher....
So be happy for the prices you have...:)

just paid 2.53 (at chevron) here in southern california... cheapest since i bought my truck 3m ago...
wonder how long it will last...
Hello,
The cheapest I have got lately was $2.33 per gallon going through Jackson, MS the other day. But, regular gas is going for $2.09 so I have no idea when the prices are going to equal out. I hope sometime soon!
Thanks for everyone's comments, but I'm still not convinced. Here in WV, regular gas is selling for $2.10, but diesel is still at $2.99. That's 89 cents/gal higher!!! Someone is making a killling...at our expense. And sure maybe the big rigs are the target, but that just raises the freight charges on everything we buy. So the consumer pays all over again.
I see that Va. diesel is 233 - 241 a gallon. Wonder why WVirginia is so much more than your sister state. No sense. If you go to FlyingJ.com you can look at fuel prices all over the country. From the NM, Co. Wy. And Mt. borders and west is higher than all the rest of the country. Colorado news says one reason is because Colorado only has one refinery in the state and the ULSD process. I dont buy the refinery excuse at all. Anyway, I just paid 253.9 a gallon here in Cheyenne, Wy. In years past, Wyoming had some of the cheapest fuel and gas in the country. Heck, Branson, Mo. was having gas wars here about a week ago. Got as low as like 1.68 a gallon. Anyway, I don't like this ribbin we are gettin out west here. Oh, and apparently in WVirginia. Have a good one.

I've been saying it, and will continue saying it, until something better comes along......Because they can......period. Convince me otherwise.
