Can anyone tell me the difference between a 4L80e, 4L85e, 6l80, and 6L90?

I'll let someone with more knowledge than me tell you the specifics, but the basics are:

- the first number is the number of gears
- the "e" means electronically controlled
- the higher the last two numbers, the heavier-duty the trans.
- I don't know what the "L" is

Dennis has it correct,
L means that the transmission is Longitudinal, inline in the engine.
There is a T, such as th 4T40-E transmission, that means the transmission is Transverse to the engine.

Actually, transverse to the vehicle, as is the engine (generally).

Thanks. Now can I swap out my 4L80 for one of the 6L's?

I am not sure but I dont think its that easy. The PCM has to be compatable to run the thing me thinks.

Yes. The controller will cost you a grand, or so, when it's available.
