The timing cover itself can be used in either configuration (v-belt or serpentine). The key differences between 6.2 and 6.5 timing covers (not waterpump backing plate) is the provision casted into a 6.5 cover for the crankshaft position sensor, only for electronic 6.5's (turbo or not).

the 6.5 that is in the van now does not have electronic IP so if i understand i should beable to use the cover that is on the 1985 6.2 J that i am going to install this weekend i hope.

Just to extinguish any confusion on which part...

You are referring to the timing cover (that covers the entire timing chain), not the flat plate that attaches to the back of the waterpump correct?

Why the replacement?

Just to make sure things go smoother for ya.

I thought we were talking about the flat plat, because of mention of water pump hence my answer. I'm wondering now too.

I am replaceing the 6.5 with a 1985 6.2 J. I took off the water pump to day and it has timing gears :) cool i think.. am replacing the water pump with a high out put pump.. also the water pump need to be replace to a ccw pump.

I am also installing a high out put fan blad i hope the a/c will work better we sit for hr's with the a/c on doing paper work and so on.

I was told i had to replace the cover over the timing gears for the water pump to work on all the stuff off the 6.5.

Why the 6.2 it is cheep fix to keep the old work g30 one ton van going.

thanks for the help
