Has there been a decision as to what is a safe high coolant temp for an 04.5 LLY? Recently, while towing with my Attitude set at 1, my coolant temp spiked at 240. The EGT was below 1350 and everything else looked fine. The engine did skip twice however. I'm used to seeing occasional 235s and the fan kicks in and brings it back to normal.

Just what can this engine take? What should I look for in a high temp towing with it?

My cooling fan on my lly came on at around 220* while pulling , it almost never would go above 210 unless it was on a hill for over a 1/4 mile. Highest I ever has seen coolant temps was 224 while pulling a 7000 lb camper up hill at 70 mph for about 1/2 mile on a 4% slope , fan came on and cooled it off. sounds like you may need to look at the clutch fan, it maybe comming on to late. My temps where on the edge monitor with my limit set at 220*(alarm)

I have an '05 LLY and towed ~9.5k lbs. this past summer over Mts. and IIRC my engine fan engaged around 220F only a couple of times over several hundred miles. I don't think it hardly ever was greater than 215F.

Ive pulled my Trailer with 4 horses on, which makes it weigh around 11k, from Laramie to Cheyene Wy on I 80 in 80-90 degree temps. Its a good grade out of Laramie. I set the cruise on 70 and let her go. Walks about a third of the way up in od then goes to 4th and stays til over the top. Temp never gets above 220. Fan is on going over the top but shuts off after it goes back into 5th.
