Ok so on my way to work noticed I was down to 1/4 tank. On my way home the gauge was just above the E line... Didn't notice until I pulled into the driveway. Had a quick bite then got back into the truck to go fill up. Looked at the gauge and now it's on the E line and the light is on. Got to the station filled up with 21.5 gal. What the heck the last two fill ups were 1/4 tank and around 21 gal.. is the gauge that screwy??

Welcome to GM fuel gauges!!

First, the guages are not at all linear. My '88 and '96 Suburbans would sit above full for 100-150 miles, then work like you'd expect them to, until you get under 1/2 tank. 1/2 tank really means 3/8-1/4 tank. If you get to 1/4 tank, better start looking for a station.

I'm not surprised that there's still a bunch of fuel in the tank when the light comes on. You didn't say if you've got a short bed or long bed. The long beds have a 34 gallon tank, which would make your 21 gallon fill ups are pretty miserable, accuracy-wise. The short bed has a 26 gal tank (correct me if I'm off a few gallons), so 21 gallons at 1/4 reading seems about perfect.

I still have my old 88 GMC 4X4 long bed. It mostly sits in the barn because of my new Duramax Crew, long bed. The old trucks' temperature guage died as did the oil pressure guage. They are both stuck at 'max-hot'. The fuel guage works just as described above by Mike and the volt meter is still good. The dealer says the guages are no longer serviceable. Anybody have a suggestion.

My VW Jetta runs 150 miles before the needle moves from being pegged above full.

Then the 1/8's above 1/2 tank seem to be worth about 80 miles each while the 1/8's below 1/2 tank seem to only be worth about 50 each.

When driving on the highway I can tell the gauge drops faster as the tank gets emptier, as compared to mileage covered.
