View Full Version : What is the purpose of this wire (pic attached)
Purchased this ol' girl used and the previous owner snipped this wire. Anybody out there know what its purpose is? It is the lowest wire (red in color) on the lower weatherpack connection. Thank you
I think that's the signal for the WIF light.
There are two functions in the fuel filter unit. Water in fuel and a fuel heater.
And a vacuum switch to monitor filter condition - mech fuel pump "draw" across the filter increases as the filter becomes dirty, turning on the W-I-F indicator.
Okay... that makes sense. My WIF light doesn't ever come on........... Thats probably why. I am just wondering why the previous owner cut it?
Thanks a million for the help!
Desperation, probably - when the water sensor or the vacuum switch failed, turning the indicator on continuously.
Replacement parts are probably not available, or expensive

Back in 92 my vacuum switch started to leak. The parts guy thought that in order to get this part I needed a whole new filter unit that the switch mounted into.
When it came, there was no switch or any provision for one. Chevy eliminated it due to problems with leaks around it, so it hasn't been available for quite awhile.
That filter assy was used by several different oems, some with the options, some without - the aluminum housing was machined only for those options selected by the oem.
