It sounds like a knock to me, my husband says miss. It sound like it is in the pass. side back. When you push in the clutch. It becomes a very loud knock. The motor has 20,000 on a rebuild. We put in a new clutch kit today. The motor itself is much louder. We were on the interstate when the noise started. We pulled off had had it loaded and brought home. Any help would be great.

The noise turned out to be a broken crankshaft. 20,000 miles on the crank.:(

Possibly the cause of insufficient crankshaft endplay, which is mostly a problem in vehicles equipped with standard shift transmissions.

Maybe missed during the rebuild.

Is the engine out?

What should the endplay be? My book says somethibg like .100" to .250". Is that right?

Remember, the GM book is in "MM" unless otherwise stated. Everyone still talks inches, well smaller than a whole inch usually.

The book says .10 - .25 MM endplay.

Translated in a language I can understand...

0.0039" - .0098"

Or, rounded like ya should..

.004" to .010"

For a manual tranny, this is a big deal. For an automatic, just have some endplay (set by center main bearing cap btw), it's ok.

OK that makes sense. Mine is at .007" and I was wondering how it was supposed to be .1" to .25". I just figured my book was wrong, because all my stuff is new.
Thanks,
Kyle

Wrong John, but...

It's just another bearing with an oil film. Too loose and it'll fail to develop oil pressure and to tight it'll bind. Like the book says, .10 - .25 mm.

Thank wrong John LOL I am hoping to have my new truck -- new to me -- totaled in MVA special, and it is running an auto which will be converted to a dual mass Fly wheel after a bit of other work.
