EGR Valve problems

I have a 05 GMC 2500HD Duramax. Got in the rig the other day and had no power and a lot of black smoke. The garage says it is a bad EGR valve. I have an Edge/Juice , 4" turbo back exhuast, and AFE intake. Could the Edge be causing thre problem. First time this has happened. I saw on another page, that there is a bypass that can be done to go around the EGR. Good or Bad???

Can some one lend a hand?

If the EGR stuck open it may do what you describe, but more than likely an injector or turbo issue. Pretty tough to diagnose with limited info.
