I have a generator (Kohler brand) powered by a Hercules engine. Recently the engine developed a "surge" - failure to hold it's 1800 RPM steady. I'd say that there is a 50 RPM fluctuation occurring rapidly (about 1 or 2 seconds for the speed to go up and down). My local expert said it has to be the IP (which includes the governor). I had the IP rebuilt by a "reputable" rebuilder - no help. The rebuilder went through it a second time then a third time - still no help. Are there any other suggestions as to the cause? This is a purely mechanical system.

I have a second Hercules engine with a broken motor mount. Any ideas where parts for these old Herc engines can be found?

Thanks,
Bruce

"Surging" is usually referenced as "hunting" by the governor. Fuel quality , fuel pressure, air supply , or any other input (bad/clogged injector , or low compression on a cylinder, as from a failing headgasket) that prevents engine from responding quickly {or excessive load} can promote surging/hunting.

I would input "Hercules diesel" into Google search; possibly "Hercules diesel Forum" .... Consider "marinediesel.com" etc...
