Hi, I am new on this forum and have been reading all I can find on 6.2's with turbos. I am getting some mixed feelings about this. So I am hoping that you guys can give me some good advice.
I am planing to put a 6.5 turbo off of a 94 silverado. I will be getting everything, turbo, intake, exhaust, manifolds, down pipe, air filter box. Basicaly the only fabication i see myself doing is runnig the oil feed lines and exhaust.
My concerns are how to control the boost? Can i use my vacume pump, and what is this I hear about manualy controling the boost.
Also I hear that you have to turn up the IP. But I have also heared that you dont have to?
I am realy confused and would realy like so help...
The 6.5 turbo setup interferes with the AC evaporator on early style trucks. Don't know if that affects you or not.
The easiest way to deal with the wastegate is to install a mechanical controller. Try Bill Heath's "Turbo Master". (Look, a sentance where all words are capitalized!)
You "need" to turn up the pump, otherwise there's no reason to install the turbo.

Thanks for the answer.
The evap wont realy affect me much if anything I will relocate what ever gets in my way.
What you said makes sense about turning up the IP. So the only issue is still the wastegate.

Can anyone give some insight on how the wastegate is controled of a regular 6.5.
Does the computer have anything to do with it. Or is it just with the vacume system

straight vaccum on turbo's GM-4 through GM-8
mechanical on GM-3 turbo's
I think that may be a little confusing. The PCM controlls the vacuum and the vacuum controls the wastegate. A Turbo Master will convert any of them to full mechanical control. I think that's what you want.

From your Avatar it looks like you have an 88-93 model 6.2L N/A pickup in the "newer" body style.
You won't have A/C evap problems.
You'll need the complete turbo setup off any 6.5TD (92-00).
Get BOTH exhaust manifolds, the intake setup, the turbo, oil drain tube, plate, etc. I can make a list if desired.
Wastegate, what's the DILL Pickle?
No problem!
Check out www.heathdiesel.com
Select the year in which your turbo setup was robbed.
Say, 96-00, select the "Turbomaster" it's a MECHANICAL wastegate controller, get's rid of the vacuum controlled stuff the computer controlls on the turbo stuff in it's natural environment.
You're installing this on a Six Point Two right? Yeah, no computer (well to control the engine's running state, maybe TCC lockup and EGR).
So, you don't want to use the vacuum controlled wategate controller.
Try it, I like it!

Thanks a lot for the information.
I am surely going with what John said and go with the mechanical controller. I was reading the reveiws and it seems like the right thing to do.
I was just wondering why I would need the driver side manifold?
And also what do you mean by getting a TCC lockup and egr?
I am getting the turbo from a 93 6.5 silverado.
Here are the items that I will be getting:
Intake
Upper plenum
Turbo ( of course)
Wastegate
pass. manifold
down pipe
oil drain tube and plate
Air filter box
All necessary tubing
All this for about $ 400.00
I will be getting the boost gauge, pyro and trans temp.
Does any one know where I can get a set for a reasonable price.
I will be putting the turbo on in a few months. I will do a complete rebuild of the entire truck. I will remove the body and replace the fuel, brake lines and clean off the frame so it can be painted. Change all bushings to the polyurethane ones. Then I will take care of any rust issues and hopefully give it a nice coat of paint.
For the interior I also want to redo it. I will be doing many things with fiberglass including making a custon dash ( i hate the stock one) and a banging sound system.
I will surely post pics of the entire process for you guys.
Thanks...
If you try to use the driver's side manifold off the 6.2 you will have to fab your own crossover pipe. With the 6.5 manifold you can just use the pipe off the 6.5 as well.

John was just listing what is computer controlled on a manually injected truck. For instance,I have a`92 1 ton with a 5spd tranny. So,no computer need to support motor functions or tranny.
