Hello everyone. I bought my first diesel recently. It's an '82 GMC 1 ton crewcab 4x4 (that may become a crewcab-extracab some day). I put in a 2 1/2" Skyjacker lift replaced all the rest of the suspension bushings, add-a leaf in the rear and airbags.

I've found lots of good information here. Thanks Edwin for the suggestion on the site and for a great project truck.

My injector pump died. I found a low mileage (54,000) 6.5 for $500 so it's now in my truck, along with new glow plugs, flexplate and valve cover gaskets. I got the motor from one of my customers. The story is that it was a Goodwrench crate motor that was put in a truck and then totaled, so Marcel bought it and put it in his '85. I had to swap a few components and brackets, but 3 days of work and it ran like a champ! We took a trip across Washington and back with no problems.

Now for a couple of questions. Can some one tell me something about the motor based on the casting marks?

The casting marks are:
12555506
B098

On the back of the block:
F18
506

I found a used Banks for a good price. Any problems with this motor

What to do with the stock 6.2? It ran great, just needs an injector pump. Should I keep it or sell it? What's it worth?

The 6.5 came with a flywheel. Are there any 5-speed trans that would work with it?

Thanks in advance for all the advice.

Todd

If your looking for a manual transmission, there should be a GM NV4500 5 speed that would bolt up to it, that was the o/d manual transmission GM used in its trucks until the D-Max's came out.

If the 6.2 is a true '82 block, it is the strongest 6.2 block ever made. A junk yard sold me my '82 complete engine for $400 bucks. I think I got ripped off, but I wanted the red block.

Just found this post while searching for another. My advice is keep that good runner you pulled. IF you have the early '506 block it MAY be more crack-prone than the one you pulled.

Enjoy your new ride.
