Anyone have any mpg averages you would get from a 95 Chevrolet W-4 Box Van with the 4cyl turbo diesel? How reliable are the motors and the trans?

Hey 96TD2500....

I thought for sure someone else would have chimed in by now. I've been interested as heck as well so I did some digging. I couldn't really find anything conclusive but I saw one guy's report of 11-12mpgs... but that was in a 20' box van which is surely not the most aero-friendly and I doubt it's geared for mileage either. As far as reliability goes... All that I've read was very favorable!! 300,000 miles seemed to be common and having cylinder liners made them easy to rebuild when the do get tired.

Here's a link to a forum I found.... had some interesting tid bits. This topic dealt mainly with the 3.9l 4BD series being plugged into a landcruiser... I'm not sure how much of would transfer to the newer 5.2l 4HK1 (2006)... but should offer some info to answer your questions.

In this same forum is this link.. http://www.isuzudieselswapper.com about a guy selling conversion rings for the 3.9 4bd to none Isuzu trannies. Site says he's swapped the v6 gasser out of his '06 1500 Silverado with the 4BD. Claims MPG's from 24 city to 32 hwy!!! Not sure it would be suited for heavier hauling but nice for legging it light down the highway!!:D

A guy I know used a 3.9 in a Jeep CJ and says he got great mileage, better than the 6 cylinder it had. The gas 6s usually get about 18 - 19 mpg. He was running 3:07 gears.
