I was wondering what kind of rear diff is in my stock 95 6.5L 2500 Sierra 4x4 because I've been looking at the HD2500 trucks and they come with a posi rear. Not sure if mine is just a regular open diff or if its some sort of weak limited slip. can anybody tell me. what kind of options do i have for making it a posi rear? make just get the diff from a newer 2500 HP truck and make it work with the right gear ratio

Do you have 6 or 8 lugs(14-bolt semi-floating)?There were light and heavy 2500s.If 8,does the rear hub stick out like a front hub on the old-style 4wds(14-bolt full-floating)?It cold be open or could be the Gov-Loc,as limited-slip/locking diff.

Being a 6 lug, you have a semi-floater, but could still have a locker.

For the locker, the easiest way to tell is to look up your codes on the glovebox sticker. Look for a code "G80" - this indicates you have the factory locking differential. You can also tell gear ratio, GT4=3.73, GT5=4.10, GU6=3.42, etc.

Also, I'm not sure the newer HD trucks automatically come with a locker, just seems that most are equipped that way.

Hope that helps.

Joe.

Huh.....
It's a 3/4 ton (2500), right? I thought 3/4 tons were 8 lug, and I thought all the diesel trucks were 8 lug. I guess I was wrong??

LD (Light Duty) is 7200# GVWR, and semi-floater 6 lug r/e. Also equipped with the same smog as the 1/2 tons in most states.

HD (Heavy Duty) is 8600# GVWR, and full floater 8 lug r/e.

However, I've seen factory LD's with 8 lug full floaters, too, with no rhyme or reason for it, and the same RPO's as the LD's.

2500 Suburbans were all 8600 GVWR.

And just to cause further confustication 1500 Suburbans with 6.5 Diesel engines had 8 lug wheels and the semi-floater 9.25" 14-bolt.

yea it is confusing as i thought all the 2500 and up trucks had 8 lug. when i got this is was very surprised, i just sold my gas with a 6 lug with new tires on AR wheels that I could have used. oh well, i'll check the glove box codes and see. I see GT4 which i guess means my gear ratio is 3.73. Rear is 14 bolt. Is that any good with the 305/70/17 in tires that I have on? No code for a limited slip, I guess might just be the standard crappy rear. Any idea what to look for if i go to a junkyard like in gas and diesel trucks to find a factory locker or posi rear? http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product2_10001_10002_750876_-1 found this Eaton LSD for 497$, looks like it should be the right one, do these trucks have 33 spline axles? Also is PowerTrax which is a locker type set up that fits and is about 470$?

I should have known it was not so cut-and-dry.
