The C and J are the 8th digit of the VIN. A "C" engine will have EGR and, depending on year model and smog state, smaller precups. The EGR is located in the center of the intake plenum, the vacuum pod poking up into the air cleaner area. The power level diferences are negligible. In the respective years, the J has been about 10 HP higher on paper. Horsepower ratings varied from 130 to 170, depending on the year and application.

My LMC truck catalog says that the "J" Engine was not offered in the 1/2 ton trucks. While the "C" was available for 1/2 and 3/4 ton.
