I have wanted a diesel for several years and recently talked my wife into letting me trade in my little Ram 50 for the 97 2500 Chevy extended cab auto tran 4.10 rear. I bought it from a local independant dealer that had gotten stuck with it when he brought it back from the auction and the IP failed. The Person he bought it for got scared away and then would not buy it. He call up the local Chevy dealer and found that it was still under warranty and got it fixed.

Rambling over.

I noticed that when crusing at about 70 I do not hear the distinct diesel knock. When at about 50 it is very appearant, not loud but obvious. Once I start up a hill it seem to go away but level ground you hear it. Am I being paranoid? Is it just because the air temps have been hovering around single digits?

Just want to make sure that the mechanic at the dealership got the IP installed correctly and that I am not destroying my engine.

Thanks
Brian

If the timing was off far enough to cause harm the computer will scream bloody murder and set the SES light.

These suckers cackle pretty good at light cruise. Once you get down into a pull they quiet down a lot.

Start them up under cold conditions and they reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeealy clatter
Sounds pretty much normal to me.

Glad to hear that it is normal. I have not seen the SES light and the truck started even without the block heater connected (plug was ripped off when I purchased the truck). Since repairing that I have kept it plugged in and it has made a difference. I have driven several diesels in the summer. But this has been my first time using a diesel at below 0 temperatures. The truck runs great and I look forward to many miles.

Thanks,
Brian
