What is the most you can get out of a 6.5TD? i hear many differnet things. some that say you can add a few parts to the stock engine and they can beat a powerstroke and others that say if you add 1 pound more boost the thing will gernade. I would like to get more out of the truck but i might be better off buying something different.

For starters, read the articles in my signature. Prior to doing my new engine, I recorded 225 HP and 435 lb-ft at the wheels on Kennedy's dynamometer. This was with just bolt on parts and programming.
I am making considerably more than that now as attested by the 2006 Pull-Off results. Numbers should be coming soon.
some of the suppliers on this page get 400 hp in marine applications. They have unlimited cooling. in a truck frame they tell me 300 is about all you can keep cool.
other than that it's all $$$. "speed costs how fast do you want to go"

Hey ronniejoe...
For comparison, what's stock hp/tq @ the wheels?

That's in the article and may be found here (http://www.schoolcraftpowertrain.com/index_files/65TDPerformance1.htm)as well.
Since I didn't test my truck in purely stock trim, we compared to a 97 Suburban that Kennedy had tested. It made 138 hp and 327 lb-ft at the wheels. My Burb with bolt on performance parts made 225 hp and 435 lb-ft at the wheels. That's an increase of 63% and 33% respectively.
My new engine is making considerably more than that now, but I don't have numbers yet.

So if my math is right.... using your 63% & 33% on a stock 190hp and 385lb/ft at the flywheel.... you were making around 310hp & 512lb/ft?!?! That's VERY respectable!! Very!! It will be very interesting to see how the new engine and your new "top secret" turbo fair!! :D
One question though.... why such a varience in percentage of increases between the HP and TQ?? 63% vs. 33%??

Percent change is calculated based on the original numbers as a baseline. For instance, going from 138 hp to 225 hp, we calculate the percent change this way:
[(225 - 138) / 138] X 100 = 63%
Going from 327 lb-ft to 435 lb-ft, we get:
[(435 - 327) / 327] X 100 = 33%
The magnitude of the torque number was significantly greater than the magnitude of the power number to start with. So, eventhough we saw a 108 lb-ft increase in torque and 87 hp increase, the change was larger for power on a percentage basis.
My new engine is making considerably more than that now, but I don't have numbers yet.
Anyone else as anxious as I am? Quit teasing us :D

Ok....
I had to stare at it a minute. I see what you're saying now. I was thinking more in terms of "compounding interest" or the likes (5%+5%+5%).
The HP gains were less than the TQ evan though the hp's percantage of gains was larger... it was only because of it's smaller starting point. "5 is a larger percentage of 6 than 6 is of 7, though the difference between is still 1..." :D

I've decided from RJ's success that his new turbo is a must have. When can we expect it's release?
If I ever get to the point of needing a motor RJ's skills say the replacement or rebuild has to be one of his too............

Hopefully very soon. I'm working on the details as we speak.
I'm shooting for summer...

ive tried several different turbos, even had to make my own wastegate housing for one of the turbos.
I have said since day one, "the 6.5 wont make torque down low". If RJ's turbo is the answer, ill step up for one!( if it will make power up top too :) )

I've said since day one that the 6.5 can make torque down low... I guess it doesn't matter though, my names not RJ.
the turbo is not the bottom end problem, you can cram all the air you want but if you can't get the pump to turn loose of the fuel early enough you WON'T make power down there.

I guese I am old school. If you want low end power I still believe in the Cat inline 6. When they went to V8's they lost it. Ran both side by side.
