View Full Version : Still advanced? Opinions needed...

After sitting all night, she fires easily after about 5 seconds of glow time. Cold advance is currently disconnected due to a faulty temp switch. Even when cold, I get no smoke at startup. It starts and idles fine when cold.

Boost seems a little slow to build, and I seem to really need to get on the throttle to get any boost. But, that could also be that I'm only about 4500lbs and just not working it very hard. Even when I do get on it enough to get boost, as soon as it shifts boost will drop to zero then start building again. Turbo is a TE06H. I can hear the turbo singing most of the time, even when I have no measured boost.

EGT. Cruising at 70 on the freeway, I have no boost and EGT is sitting between 450-500. At about 75, I start to see about 1psi and 2-3 at 80, while egt will stay right at 500. I did a full acceleration run (0-90) and EGT got up to about 850. I got 10psi at the top of 1st and 2nd, but could not get more than 5-6psi in third.

Timing - pump is offset about 1/8" to the passenger side. I do have gears if that makes a difference (I seem to recall someone saying that the gears had some advance or retard built into them).

If I really get on it from a dead stop, I get a whisp of brownish smoke but it goes away immediately. Smog test measured opacity at 5.5% (I'm allowed as much as 20%).

The rattle. There is no mistaking that it is a diesel. Well, at least I can tell, but the people at the smog test station couldn't (story for another day). On the freeway, as I go over 65mph and the engine approaches 2000rpm, the rattle goes away and all I can hear is a nice rumble from my exhaust. Any RPM below that, and I can hear the rattle.

Anyone in Phoenix with a 6.2/6.5 I can listen to?

What say ye experts here? Still too advanced? Advanced and not enough fuel?

Which TE06H do you have?

There are two, a wastegated one and a non-wastegated one.

I would think the W/G version would have a smaller housing.

Your boost levels are almost like mine on my Banks 6.2 pickup with the T04B in a light 1/2 ton 2WD truck, but only 1/4 turn 6.2 pump.

You're right in that the timing needs to be retarded just a tad. What does it sound like line-2-line?

Oh, wait! Was your '97 engine electronic from the get-go? If so it probably doesn't have a real scribe line on the cover, probably a guess one that aligned with a DS4 when a tech put one there.

My MFI '97 6.5TD that I'm installing in my '82 this weekend is this way, no mark on the cover.. Should be fun...

I have the version with the wastegate.

Good point about the cover. The line looks like a factory line, but if it was originally from the electronic pump then who knows how that relates to my 4911 pump. What do you mean about "line to line"?

usually, line-to-line means that the timing mark on the cover should be aligned with the line on the pump flange.

In this case it's not relevant.

Coincidentally, the '97 6.5 I got running this weekend for my playtoy is the same way.

What I found out is that I got close to accurate timing advance by having the pump turned to the driver's side.

Lemme explain.

On an electronic 6.5, when installing the pump on the flange via it's mounting bolts to the cover. I usually just center the stud in the middle of the flange. Bolt it together and call it done, let the computer compensate. Gotten it pretty close on my '95 this way.

But, in the case of MFI. I found that the stud needs to be closer to the driver's side, less room. I observed this by looking at some dusty throttle cable pump brackets (also cover one of the stud holes) and seeing the position. I made this choice, fired up my rig, a little more advance than I thought it should have, but pretty close, close enough I can bump it.

I plan to run the timing meter on it to see how close.

Do you have a timing tab on your engine? It will be a tab above the harmonic balancer, like on a gasser.

Thanks John. No timing tab. Didn't realize it until the engine was in and there was no easy way for me to find true tdc to install the tab correctly.

I moved the pump about another 1/8" to the passenger side and it made a huge difference. Still starts easy when cold with no smoke, but it is significantly quieter. Seems to want to build boost easier also. Throttle is much more responsive and I have much better off-idle power. I noticed that I don't have to use as much throttle to get it going and keep it going. EGT at cruise is down slightly also. I can still cruise at 70 with 0 boost and EGT is now just sitting barely over 400, but boost comes in more quickly if I roll onto the throttle.

I think what I am going to do now is to install a timing tab so that I can track how much I am moving the timing now. I figure I'll keep retarding it about a degree at a time and drive it and see how it reacts.

I'm happy with the latest change, as it is starting to feel the way I think it should feel.
