View Full Version : Cold air coming in on passenger side???
I have a 2001 GMC ext cab 4x4 and driving it home from denver to NJ I had a lot of cold air coming in on the passenger side front floor area even with the heater on high heat the cold air was over powering the heat. Also had the same problem with my dads truck, same year but not 4x4.
Has anyone else had this and know what is causing this?
I didn't notice it until night when the temps were in the 20 deg area.
Thanks.
Jeff.
This was a major issue on my 2001 3500 and dealer never was able to fix it. If you do a search on here you can find lots of threads about it, I believe the ultimate fix requires re-sealing something behind the dash but it sounds like a major job. My wife used to stuff an extra coat under the dash during the winter.

I had the same issue with my 2001 Ext cab dually. Turned out there was a TSB on that problem. The seal around the heater box was installed incorrectly from the factory and the fix is to replace the seal. That's what fixed mine and my wife is much happier on those cold winter nights.....uh oh, umm, I mean because of no cold air coming in anymore...:o

I forgot to mention that even though you get the seal fixed you may still feel a slight bit of cool air that's because the climate control system was designed to not allow you to use recirculation during heater mode....dumb I know, but I think it's a safety thing. Anyways, the fix made a big difference in my truck....hope this helps.

Thanks for the replys...
So there is a TSB and not a recall... Does that mean I pay for there mistake?
My Dads truck does the same thing...
Not too bad when warm out but when it drops below 20 it get mighty cold in thar...

I didn't pay a dime, and I even had the cabin air filters replaced and they only charged me for the filters not the labor to install. It's been awhile ago, but I'm purty sure it was a TSB.

Is this what you have going on?
Subject: Passenger SIde of Vehicle Colder/Warmer Than Drivers SIde (Repair HVAC Case to Cowl Seal) #01-01-37-008 - (03/29/2001)
Models: 1999-2001 Chevrolet and GMC C/K Pickup (Silverado, Sierra) and Utility (Suburban, Tahoe, Yukon, Yukon XL) Models
2002 Cadillac Escalade
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Condition
Some customers may comment that the passenger side of the vehicle may be:
Colder than the driver's side when the heat mode is on.
Warmer than the driver's side when the air conditioning (A/C) mode is on.
There may be dampness on the vehicle dash assembly when the A/C mode is on.
Cause
Condition may be due to poor sealing of the HVAC air inlet case to the front of dash or the recirculation mode door actuator may not hold the recirculation door closed while driving.
I went to my dealer yesturday and he said I have to call GM first b4 he will do anything because of milage at 158000.
He also did try looking up the TSB and found to many to list.
Does this sound right?
do I have to call GM and complain first b4 they will fix this?
Thanks.

Take that info Duramaster posted (Repair HVAC Case to Cowl Seal) #01-01-37-008 - (03/29/2001) to the dealer and let him look up that specific one. Then if you have to, contact GM. When I got mine fixed I think I had only 20 - 25K miles so maybe it got covered under warranty, but you'd think if it was messed up from the factory they would handle it.

I had the same issue and I removed the glove compartment to get in and around heater box. I used about 3 feet of foam pipe insulation and stuffed it between the heater box, firewall, and passanger side of the cab. Cold air problem solved for about $10.00 and an hour's work.

Now that's what I am calling a Million Dollar FIX!!!
I've had the same issue in my '02 since new, but the only time it was an issue was/is during my annual hunting trips up north. But now that I am moving to WY, I better get this fixed or suffer the wrath of the wife!
