I heard a rumor that putting a performance intake on a diesel is bad for the motor. This seems kinda dumb to me, I mean more air/more fuel=more power.
Is this just a urban legend?
More Power

If the aftermarket intake allows hotter underhood air to enter, yes, it'll hurt performance. If the air filter element allows more dirt to enter the engine, yes, it's a bad choice. If neither of these happens, they're OK.
I have noticed a trend over the past 6-12 months, in that more sealed air box housings are being advertised. Banks & Volant are two examples of these.

Not only that, but DP mag ran a series of tests with the am kits against the factory setup, only to find that the factory engineers actually did know more than the street bunch, in every category.

AMEN
I measured an inlet air temperature, IAT, of 185 today, and wasn't even towing. That get's up to 240, and the turbo doesn't even want to spool. That 185 was with a stock 05 intake. With AFE it was 10 degrees better. With an older volant, still over 160. I have not yet seen an aftermarket intake do well in this truck, I have tested 5 of them.
With an intake I built, it was 140. I am hoping to bring that down to 110-120 with a little more work. The difference in turbo performance is night and day.
