View Full Version : Tranny Swap
6.5 Detroit Diesel

Planning on doing a tranny swap in my boss' 1983 6.2 1500. It's two wheel drive with the four speed in it. 3.08 rearend. I've already told him that going from a four speed to a five speed won't give that much better milage as it already has good highway gears. However, he wants the swap done. Question is, will the NV4500 bolt up to the 6.2? I know that we will have to cut out the pan, but there is no use if the tranny won't work with engine. I have all the clutch parts to switch to hydraulic.

Yes, the NV4500 will work. This trans was used with the 6.5 in the 90's, so all of the factory parts exist to make the switch. I would prefer 3.42 gearing for best fuel economy when using an OD trans, but he'll be able to run in direct whenever he chooses. :)

Thanks for the reply. I found out that he had the rear end replaced, so I will have to pop the cover and see what is in there now.
Leave the cover on. Jack up one side of the truck, spin the wheel one revolution and count the axle revolutions.

go to your nearest mag stand and pic up the may 2007 petersens 4wheel and off road they just did the whole swap from an auto th400 to the nv4500. they did it in a 4x4 but the trany swap part is still the same. they said it made a world of difference
the may 2007 petersens 4wheel had the 6.2 w the Banks TD
