View Full Version : find fusible link for glow plug controller

I just switched out a bad 6.2 to a good 6.2 in my 89 Suburban. The good motor came out of a 83 pickup.

Before I switch the motors the glow plugs were working well. When I turned key for the first time, there was a spark at the passenger battery and I do not have any power to the glow plug controller. I suspect the fusible link has been fried, but I don't know where it is at.

Any help is appreciated. Hopefully I'll have the suburban going this weekend and the wife will be happy.

There are several sections of fusible links in the glow wiring. I recommend using an ohm meter to check each section for continuity. There is a heavy fusible link on the output side of the glow relay, and each glow plug connector uses a short section of smaller gauge link. You'll need to check each.

You can replace sections of the fusible link. The local auto parts store near here carries it in bulk. The wiring is identified by a square mm (millimeter) identification (stamped on the wire at intervals). For example, the 8 individual fusible links connecting to each glow plug is .8 mm sq.

Thanks. What is happening is there is NO power on the red wire coming to the glow plug controller to start with.

Where do you suggest looking to solve this problem?

Fusable links are usually at the end of the wire nearest the power source.
