Alright, it has been awhile since I've posted up. I thought ya'll might be able to help me out.

Background: I have an 86 CUCV M1031 with utility box on the back. It has a 12KW generator run from the the PTO on the 205 tcase (therefore I need to keep this TC). Everything is currently stock with 24V 6.2L. Having trouble with my TH400 tranny and instead of fixing it I would like to 'upgrade' to overdrive to give the 4.56 gears more highway manners.

I need to know what needs to be done to swap the 4l80 into my truck. I have a line on a 2WD 4L80 behind a non-turbo 6.5. I can get the whole thing and all the computer and harness if required. What do I need to do to make this work?

Any and all help is much appreciated.

The people that have done this type of transfer have to buy a stand alone computer to talk to the new 4L80E. The computer from your donor vehicle will not do you any good (unless you want to go all electronic on your truck). Jet Performance is one manufacturer who sells the computer. Price was over $1000 a few years ago. September 2000 issue of 4 Wheeler describes Jim Bigleys install of the 4L80E in his 1989 GMC K2500.

If the non-turbo 6.5 4L80-E you're talking about was mechanically injected, then yes, you can use the donor wiring harness and TCM (computer). Both the trans and computer would be a good match if the 6.5 was a mechanically injected engine, cuz the 4L80-E will have the correct torque converter and the computer will be programmed correctly for the diesel app. You'll also need the matching 6.5 engine speed sensor and TPS (throttle position sensor). :)
