View Full Version : 6.5 na to 6.5 turbo
What will I need to change to make the 6.5na to a turbo. are the heads the same?
Joe
With a DB2 IP, just the manifolds, turbo, downpipe, '97 cooling upgrades
DS4 requires exh manifold, turbo, upper intake plenum with IAT, MAP sensors, sensor wiring to PCM, turbo chip for PCM, '97 cooling upgrades.
Turbo and n\a engine mechanicals are same, except vans get seperate intake manifold, exhaust manifolds, and turbo, so a van upgrade will require specific pieces from a turbo van
Thank you I think I broke the crank in my 6.5 TD and im looking for a replacement. I was looking at 6.2 but dont want to change the heads.
so I have all the parts to do the swap but just wanted to comfirm.
Joe
How do you tell the differance between a 6.2 and a 6.5 NA engine.
Joe
It can be tough without measuring the bore.
I have a 94 year model 6.2 that looks just like any 94 6.5. It has the same block casting number too. (599)
If it has a two piece rear main seal its definately not a 6.5
I know a local fellow that has a 95 Burb, the engine went away while it was under warranty and the GM dealer stuffed in a crate engine to replace it.
The rig now has close to 200K on the clock and he decided to freshen the engine and while that was being done the tranny could use a lick or two also.
He and his sons called me in to help with advice on the project.
Engine out and apart
I bring my mics over to measure things for him and look over the parts.
Hmmmm Bore is way too small for a 6.5.
Somehow back in 96 when the engine was replaced a 6.2 crate engine was installed instead of a 6.5
Now its seems to me that somebody should have caught that but it got through and has been a happy little camper and served well for all those miles.
The part I found interesting was that the engine had the nesessary port for the crank sensor and the proper timing gear on the crank.
Knowing the dealer that did it, its possible they took the components off his 6.5 and stuffed them onto the new engine to make it work.
Stranger things have happened though.
Anyway on a used engine its gonna be tough to actually be sure you have a 6.5 or 6.2 especially if its a late engine with a single piece rear main.
My 94 6.2 has the crank position sensor hole (Plugged) and all the goodies to go with it.
During the tear down I found the factory type sealant on the front cover so I am fairly sure it was still factory.
I am currious about why these anomalies would have occured.
One would think the factory would have better quality control than this.
The 6.2 was never offered with a DS4 IP.
There are however a lot of rigs that came with 6.2 engines that got 6.5 crate engines stuffed back in and are running with 6.2 pumps.
OMG what a mess. ;0)
Oh well such is life
