Smoke while Idleing

Recently I have been noticing that I can see more diesel smoke comming from the exhaust system while idleing. The engine has 167,000 miles on her. The exhast doesnt really smell like regular diesel smoke. I guess you could say that it might smell rich. It just doesnt have the diesel smell anymore. Any Thoughts because I have been getting bad mileage too. Around 11-13 on the highway and same for around town. I have been running stanadyne plus for 6 months now also. Plus the fuel filter has been changed. Any thoughts?

I had noticed the same smell with my motor, kinda rich, like you said. Just put new injectors in at 163k, and I'm not getting the smell anymore. Those had been the original injectors.

One or two of the injectors looked like they might have been dripping. Probly not burning too efficiently.

One sorta funny side effect, since I changed the inj's, it takes a few more turns to start. I believe it's because of one or two reasons: either the one or two suspect injectors's aren't dripping fuel and priming that cylinder, or, it takes the pump a little longer to build enough pressure to pop the injectors.

Truck has always started very quickly, and still does. It's just that fraction of a second more turns, now.

Oh, yeah, forgot to mention. 'Maintaining' the clogged cat made a world of difference in performance, smoke, and MPG. Don't know if you have one or not.

what type of injectors did you end up going with and how much did they cost you?

Just ordered the stock replacements, and the install kit from Kennedy Diesel, right off the web site. JK's price and core policy was better than NAPA, Advance, or Autozone, and I would rather send my business to a TDP supporter. Even more importantly, I trust JK's choice of products far more than questionable sources behind the chain stores.

Although, they're gonna cost me a lot more, if I don't ship the old ones back real soon, to avoid the core charge. Don't charge me yet, JK, I promise I'll ship them this week !!
