I had an 86 6.2 that had the inhibit switch in the RH head in the back.

The usual fix was to jumper the two line plug, tape it up and forget about it.

Does anyone here know how long Gm used that switch with the 6.2's

The old toad stool type controller had one built in but when they went to the newer style glow controls they changed things a bunch.

IIRC the inhibit switch was used up till '89 and was in the t-stat crossover manifold. The cold advance switch was in the pass side head @ the rear.

According to Jim Bigley, "Modifying Reparing the 1985-93 Glow Plug Controller" All one needs to do is open it up, and install a 5 ohm, 2 watt resistor in the pin c lead. Depending on the ambient temp., that mod will lenthen the gp cycles by 2 to 4 seconds.

Inhibit switch usage was hit-or-miss.

82-83 Didn't have one
84 did have it (old style controller).

Then the water gets a bit less clear...

Some 85's had it, some 86's had it (mine does).

The 88-91's Had the inihbit switch, but it's located on the coolant crossover pipe on the passenger's side (v-belt blazers and suburbans).

My 91 has the inhibit switch in this location, it's temp is likely set higher than the ones used on the back of the cylinder heads, say, on the '86.

Yeah, the fix, shunt it and forget it, or if it ain't broke, don't fix (me).
