View Full Version : Need Help with Conversion
I have a question for the group, I currently own a 1996 suburban 6.5TD, which I have listed for sale in the classified section (see details). I have decided to sell it only because I have no alternative, or diesel shop in my area with the capability to fix my vehicle. I would like to replace the 4L80E transmission to a 700 R4, and convert the engine to a mechanical fuel injection pump, the DB2-4911. Its my understanding that it will require changing the existing fuel lines to the injectors, etc. There may be some other modifications required. Is there anyone out here that has converted their 6.5TD as I am wanting to do? Can someone in the S.E. help me with this conversion, please? If I can find someone to do this, I am willing to make the investment, but with someone knowledgeable with this conversion, who has already done several, and will guarantee their work. Any suggestions, or recommendations from the group would be appreciated! I live 2 hrs from Atlanta, GA, and would have to trailer the vehicle to the shop. The transmission has no reverse, and burned up pretty bad. Thank you all for any help! Ed, Murphy, NC
Ed, member bobbiemartin has a how-to booklet on e-bay that should just fill your needs, even describing how to retain the 4L80E if necessary.
You might also PM him for further...........

Ed, Good talking to you on the phone today.
So everyone here is up to speed, I suggested a TH700R4 as a possible replacement only because Ed's existing 4L80-E needs to be replaced/rebuilt and he would like to go the mechanical fuel injection route - and he mentioned he didn't use the Sub to tow. A 700 is about 1/2 the cost of a 4L80.
The Diesel Depot in Sandersville, GA is as close as I can come to a shop that could do the work. If someone has another idea... feel free to chime in. :)

Jim,
Thank you again for the help, and the clarification.
I second the motion on the 700R
A good 88-90 K case 700R4 with all the goodies and updates installed will do a wonderful job.
Use the TV cable brackets from a 6.2 truck and this will get you all hooked up to your IP.
Use the 92-93 6.5 diesel throttle cable from the pickups.
The hole is already in the firewall and or it may need to be punched out.
Use the 92-93 throttle cable bracket for the IP.
You can use your exisiting fuel filter and fuel pump system too.
The cruise will be more problematic as the original system was set up to run the DS4 and not a cruise module.
If you can do without the cruise its not an issue.
The output shaft on the 4L80 and the 700 are different but a suitable adapter can be had from one of several companies that make such goods.
You need an adapter to marry the 700 to the T case and you need the output shaft for the 700 to get the shaft and the input spline to talk to one another.
Several ways to do this but you make the choice.
We can help for sure
This is not a terribly nasty job but will require a little thinking and planning to get it all together.
I have helped on one such conversion. I built the tranny and got the T case and the 700 ready to go in.
Another fellow did the actual install.
Worked fine.
