There used to be a link to a page, by Britannic I think, that clearly detailed how to time a mech IP. I've lost it, does anybody have it or know it??
Cheers!
Well its not real tough to get it close.
With the IP indexed into the drive gear just align the marks on the pump with the mark on the cover.
As far as actual timing, the use of a pulse sensor that will drive a timing light works well.
These units clamp to the #1 HP line and will trigger a timing light.
There are of course the Lumi Mags and other spendy devices.
Or you can do it like many of us Outlaws do. Bump it up until your neighbors powerstroke runs off and hides in fright and then back it off a tad.
I am familiar with the link you quoted but its whereabouts escapes me.

Thanks Robyn,
For those of us directionally challenged (says the desert racer:eek: ) which way to you rotate the IP? I assume if your facing the cab, it needs to rotate to the right/drivers side... When do you know its too far advanced?
When last we chatted here, I was thinking of tossing in the oil burner for a 502 big block but have seen the errors of my ways. I've just ordered a custom set of 18:1 pistons (along with studs and girdles) and had a custom pulley machined to turn up the boost on my whipple supercharger. Long way to go before I need to adjust the IP but, like the boy scouts, I like to be prepared:D

OK here is the skinny
The IP is gear driven and turns opposite rotation to the crank.
Look at the crank and see how it rotates, now with the IP rotating bacwards from that, turn the IP so it is going against the direction of its rotation to advance it.
I believe its as you said though. But if in doubt check the direction of the crank and extrapolate.. :D
Hope this tid bit is useful
Robyn
Robyn I am following this thread with intrest. I have seen the comparrison to a 7.3 for the way the truck idles when timing it but don't understand. Can you clarify please.
