Tach?

Hello,

I have a question about the tach, I bought my truck two months ago and the tach does not work.

I know that the signal for the guage is off the alternator but where on the alternator? I was looking at it today and didn't see it. I was going to try and follow the wires from there.

Also if I cannot find the fault can I hook up an aftermarket tach to the alternator? (the tach says to hook up to a ignition coil -ve) I know all it needs is a pulse generation.
