Im new to this fourm and have just perchased a 88 GMC with a 6.2. It runs great. Im looking for some basic upgrades for more power without killing relibility.I know they dont always go together. It has dual exhaust but looks like they put cheep napa mufflers on it. everthing else is stock. please any suggestions.
As with any Diesel try to get more air moving through the engine with free flowing intake and exhaust. You can get away pretty inexpensive with both. By far the best HP and economy improver wold be to add a turbo kit. Banks is the most well known but there are others out there. The banks kit comes with everything intake, exhaust, and turbo set up not sure about the others. But from my understanding it will bring a 6.2 to 6.5 power levels and increase fuel milage. The down fall here is the kits cost around $2000. Hope this info helps
Keep a sharp eye on Ebay or craigs list and a Banks turbo setup can be found for around $600-$1000 with all the goodies
A good dual exhaust with a tad larger pipes and good mufflers will help some but the real deal is the turbo.
If you go turbo a 3-1/2" single system will do the trick on the little 6.2 and really wake it up.
Let us know if we can be of help

thanks for the suggestions. I will add a turbo later for now what size duals should i be running and no mufflers or should i run mufflers
Well it would be a shame to spend a bunch of $$$ on a set of duals only to yank it off later on. If it were me I would just hang on untill I decided to do the turbo and then do the exhaust.
2-1/2" duals with good quality mufflers would do real fine for a stocker.
You might consider doing a 3-1/2" single and do it so you could cut it up forward when you do the turbo and then you would only lose a little pipe.
The turbo downpipe could be connected to your system then and you would not need to buy another complete system.
I suspect that GM did the duals for a reason though as the cost of a single system at the factory would have been cheaper.
You could do a dual 2-1/2 and then when you do your turbo just add a Y pipe up front to connect the turbo downpipe to the dual system.
Run mufflers though as these little beasts can be a tad nasty sounding with straight pipes and it will tend to get on ones nerves after a while, not to mention draw attention of the cops.
Many options for you :D
Hope this helps
