I was talking to a friend about switching over to one of the synthetics at my next oil change. He made the "maybe not a good idea face", until I asked why? He had heard that the synthetics have a tendancy to "find ways out between seals etc.", bottom line, LEAK. Has anybody heard this? I personally don't prescribe to this theory, but before I jump in and make the switch I thought best to pose this question to the panel of experts on the forum!!

Has anybody had any luck with the royal purple or amsoil? How about the amsoil filter line?

If you have a leak, I have experienced that synthetic will leak a bit more.

So...fix the leak.

I started my truck on synthetic @ 130K and I dont find puddles in the morning. Like I said before it may exploit a leak.

In these rigs I think the benefits outweigh the leak exploitation.

Cost may be a factor because these rigs soot up the oil pretty quick, so frequent oil changes can add up fa$t. You might want to invest in a secondary filter and have the oil tested frequently to extend your changes.

That sounds like solid advice for only .02! I think I will hold off to do the switch over until I have the secondary filter system in. I have been looking at the the amsoil as well as the fs brand, but WOW! a little on the pricey side. I guess I'll have to peddle some more of my crap on EBAY.

Any suggestions in regard to brand for the bypass filters... bang for your buck, etc.???

Thanks

True. Several options and lots of places to drop some change. We have several Advertisers (http://www.thedieselpage.com/vendors/main.htm) that carry bypass filtration systems, at very competitive pricing. Service after the sale can't be beat anywhere with these guys. If you have a plan (goal), contact Greg Landuyt at www.lubricationspecialist.com . He's an Amsoil dealer, uses what he sells, and is very knowledgeable of his products. It would be in a person's best interest to find all the related products and support in the same place. He can do that. It may cost a little more to start out, but you'll save money (and grief) in the long haul. If you encounter issues, it isn't always simple to describe a problem to someone that isn't familiar with what you are using.

Good Day!

I've been using 5@-40 Synthetic Rotella in everything I own for a couple years now. I had the same fear. All consume the same amount of oil they did (from all causes) as B4 synthetic.

I did it because at that time I could get this oil for $11.56/gal. Yup, I can't leave it in much longer, but the huge advantage to me is that I now only stock one oil for everything: trucks, cars, mowers, etc.

This oil is now so pricey that I'm considering buying a 55 gallon drum of Amsoil 5W-40; we'll see when the time comes.

Blessings!

I use the Amsoil 15W-40 and love it. I use the synthetic in all my vehicles. It is true if you have a leak it will get worse, and a leak may develop in a marginal seal. I sell the stuff and have a lot of people who switch and don't look back. Some higher miliage car do start to leak.

OK, now for arguments sake and me being a bit strapped for cash to chase leaks if this does occur. If I go with the syn and discover I'm beginning to get some leaks, if I went back to good old non syn oil, will the leaks go away over time?

I think with all that has been said, I'm going to do plan a switch over during the next servicing periods.

Thanks for the input

The leak will sometimes go away once the source of the leak collects enough sludge to plug it.

I have used Royal Purple for about 10 years now. I have found it to be excellent oil. Recently I've had a harder time finding it since I moved to the sticks and have switched to Amsoil which I believe is as well outstanding, but a little more expensive than RP.
The problem we all have with the 6.5 is OIL CONSUMPTION. These engines will swallow something like a quart of your high dollar oil every 3,000 miles. SO, you definitely want a by-pass oil filter, for in the course of driving 21,000 miles you have added back in 7 quarts, the engine's capacity.
I drain mine annually regardless and have seen very good results on longevity: I just toasted a Lawnboy 6.0HP Tecumseh walk behind mower after 13 hard seasons of Texas San Augustine mowing. I always mulch which requires maximum power. I think I may have doubled that little engines life with the RP and annual drains.

So far, 16K on the Amsoil and the dual bypass oil filtration system, all from Greg. Oil analysis and Greg say that it is still good to go.

Everyone talks about how it is better for your engine and the extended drain intervals. No one ever mention the convienence. I haven't changed oil in a year and a half. The convienence is priceless!

I found a leak in my airbox initially. After fixing that, the rate of increase in wear metals slowed greatly.

Now I run the Amsoil round filter with the 97 air box. At 20K, I will test again.

I have one for my Dodge that I will be installing. I am hooked on the convienence.

using a 15-40cj-4 parasynthetic oil in our 07.5 wrecker with the dmax our last oil change was at 30k but the UOA said it was still good to go, I just wasn't comfortable letting it go longer then that yet. I know a few guys that are getting 150k+ on an oil change with the same oil, in there Freightliners.
