Is there an easy way of determining the condition of a shock on a vehicle with a heavy duty suspension such as the Duramax. I own a 2001 Ext Cab Duramax with 76,000 miles. Shocks are still original and would like to know if there are any handling characteristics that would indicate degraded shocks and what shock folks are finding work best. I do tow a 13,000 pound travel traler.

I am at about 60,000 miles and on my third (including original) set of shocks -- I run a lot of gravel roads. The original shocks were done before they even put them on the truck!!

I have used the Rancho RS 9000 shocks with good results, and I like the adjustable valving, you can stiffen them up for towing and then soften them for "pleasure" driving. Whatever shocks you get get a good set as shocks make a big difference in ride quality even in a HD suspension system.

ALL 2500 and 3500 hd trucks need rear shocks the day they leave the production line! My 2001 truck I put RS 9000 on it at 25K noticed a huge differance, swaped them on to my 2004.5 truck the first weeks I owned it. At this time the shocks had just over 50K on them , again Huge improvement even with the miles that where on them. Traded that truck in with just over 115,000 miles on the shocks it still rode and drove better then a brand new 2006..... the 2006 in the frist 2000 miles got a set of bilstines , the bilstines dont make it ride as harsh as the RS 9000s so there not as good towing but empty they are by far the best shock to date I have used. Bilstines or RS 9000x you cant go wrong , the RS 9000 after 3 winter the adjuster knob starts to stick if your into makeing adjustment often but honestly I set mine on the high side of the middle of the scale and left them there.

Put the shocks on!!!!!!!!!!!!! The factory shocks are marginal, I had one front dead in the first 5000miles.!! Monroe makes a decent heavy duty shock you might try, I am happy with the Monroes. Bilstins are very popular among the readers on these forums and are good. bob..............

If they don't list your vehicle in the online catalog, call them. They also have "modified" lengths, so be sure to specify stock or raised/lowered.
