View Full Version : trans sending unit location?

ok I know this was talked about and I did searching on this when I did my install. I was wondering if gm put on from factory where would they have put it? I have mine installed in the out line to the trans cooler I was just wondering...

For temperature sending port, you could remove the 1/8 NPT plug on the driver's side of the transmission that is just above the shift linkage and a little behind. It's a pressure test port, and serves well for a heat sending unit.

It is easer to install if you remove the bolts that hold the shift mechanism in place to gain access to the plug. Chock the wheels so the truck dosent roll when you losen the linkage

Why not simply sample the temperature of the fluid in the pan -- as thats what is about to be consumed by the unit!

Sort of like testing the temperature of the pizza pie - before taking a bite! If its too hot; who cares where we entertain it, in the device! ITS TOO HOT!

Cuz...

Sampling from the pan requires removal of the pan, which then requires welding on a bung and cleaning and re-installing w/ new fluid and filter.

I ain't got a welder on tap...

So, many choose this route.

I agree though, sampling from the pan is a great place to take a measurement.

Would be worth comparing the two maybe?

I have my sensor in the pan & i have watched the temp on a scan tool while towing. The two temps read the same. Its been a long time but i got a fitting from napa that did not require welding. It was a two piece deal that just compressed some fiber washers against the pan on both sides. Its been in there for a couple of years & never leaked a drop unlike the last one i welded into a dodge pan for a customer. I have a friend that put his in the pressure test port & it reads consistantly higher than mine. Kinda like the pre & post turbo thing.
