Today, out of the blue, I had SES light and code P0404 thrown twice. It is EGR "Open condition" related, so I did some searching. I've found info about the EGR and related block off plate for 4.5 to LBZ LLY Duramax engines, but nothing on LB7 EGR. I can't even locate it to check the blue wire that has been mentioned in threads. If anyone is familar with the California spec LB7 EGR stuff to point me in the right direction or to a thread somewhere, I'd appeciate it.

thanks,
siggy

Also, keep in mind that the 2002-2004 LB7 EGR that was used in the CA trucks is different than the EGR used in the LLY version. The LB7 EGR is vacuum operated and has a vacuum pump on the passenger side of the engine. The LLY version is not vacuum operated and there is no vacuum pump.

What did you come with SIGGY?

Thanks for the diagnostic chart! I had cleared the codes after reading them and they have not come up again, been almost 1K miles and all is good. I'm wondering if it was a fluke one-time event, or a preview of upcoming issues. This truck has been very solid and reliable so far, my fingers are crossed that things will remain so. 137,000+ happy miles, I keep telling myself I don't need to upgrade to a new truck. Over and over...

Siggy,

My EGR was replaced five monthe ago and the code came again last week. A mech in Oregon took it out and a water cooled pipe that conects to it and cleaned the pipe. It was vety cloged. Hope this helps.

I happen to have an 03 LB7 and have had the darn P0404 code for several months now. I've replaced:
1997254
and
94459951

If anyone has anymore words of wisdom, I'd really appreciate it. Could I see that diagnostic chart?

is the EGR supposed to move? This weekend I was looking at it and couldn't budge it...

anyone?

Have truck in dealer for noise after water pump replacement, belt off sounds goes away we think its the tensioner and are replacing that. Truck also had SES and tech says it has P0404 and P1404 wants to clean or replace the EGR valve. I am wondering if the EGR cooler needs cleaning, truck has 150k miles and usually runs light duty no heavy towing. Also wondering if EGR needs calibration.

It may only need cleaning. Tough call as to whether it's worth the effort or just write the EGR out of the programming.... ;)

That would be my best suggestion as there are without a doubt more headaches coming.

Can someone elaborate on what is happening when the 1404 code is thrown? Is the EGR not opening correctly? Also I know the EGR on this truck runs off the vacuum pump. Is there anything else that runs off the vacuum pump? If the pump were failing would it cause this code to be thrown?

Have you checked the vaccum?

Do these EGR systems need a position re-learn after replacing parts?

Jim,

Can you tell me how to check the vacuum? I assume that when the dealer replaced the EGR valve they would have done a re-learn but maybe not.

I have a 2003 2500HD with the LB7. I just replaced my vacuum pump due to failure. After the pump was replaced, and truck driven a little, the SES light came on. It came up with the P0404 code. I know it has something to do with the EGR but cant figure out how to diagnose the problem. I have read that it might not be the EGR itself.

The truck seems to run fine, no idle or performance issues. After the code was reset, less than 20 miles later the SES light came back, so did the P0404 code.

Any thoughts????

I’ve been having issues with my LB7 throwing ses codes at me. A buddy pulled the code up and tells me I need to clean my EGR, my question is does my 2003 lb7 have a cooler as well? I can’t find them any where. Any help would be very much appreciated. If there’s a better way please help
