I've got a 94 1 ton 4wd duallie with 4.10 gears and g80 limited slip (gov-lock). Would like to trade for the same running gear but with 3.42 gears. I would consider a SRW. If you're not too far away, we could meet halfway and find a shop to swap them in. e-mail me at elhombresd at yahoo dot com if you think we can work something out.

Thanks,

Adam

Welcome to the Forums!

That's a tough bill to fill. 3.42 was not available OEM on the 3/4 or 1 tons. Aftermarket R&P's are available (when they're not out of stock). If someone has a 3.42 in a 14 bolt FF, it's likely they've upgraded it for a reason. Lots of 3.73's out there, though. Keep in mind, whichever way you go, you have to do the front, too. Good luck.

Try; pirate4x4.com their classified ads show 1,000's of rears for sale. Keep in mind 3.42's are hard to impossible to find in a GMC 14 bolt ff.

Around here, the majority of FF carriers that we remove are 3.42's. We usually take off the ring gear. 3.42's shouldn't be that hard to find, especially with older gasser 3/4 tons. I even have a FF Carrier with a 3.23 gear set and matching pinion.

I am looking to do the same thing. (Not whole rear)4.10/3.42 The only gear I have found is after market. The GM gear was discontinued. Good Luck

Following 6.5 Detroit's message, I looked at some online salvage places. Plenty of 3.42s in 3/4 ton axles. For front axles, you can get an 8 bolt 3.42. For the rear, 4x4 Full Floating 8 bolt turns up plenty as well. Locking, non-locking, and some say 10.5 inch.

Can I bolt 3/4 running gear right on? Or is it better to have an aftermarket gear set put in? Nice new gears, right? Seems like a job best left to a specialty shop--I'm sure not doing it!

Thoughts please?

The front 9.25" IFS diff used in later 2500 Burbs and 3500 trucks has a 14 bolt case and is rated 8,600 lb+, if going to a straight axle then a Ford dana 70 driverside drop is best choice.

I'll be pulling my GM 3.42's soon and will put them on market.
