I met this guy recently - he has over 500 of these government surplus engines. They are military rebuilds. You can pick out your own, or have him pick one for you.

Hi Mark

First off thanks for passing this along, not all members can buy a nice 5 or 6 thousand dollar engine for their truck. Check out this guys e-bay description. He does not guarantee a rebuilt engine but the picture he shows in the ad is a rebuilt one. He states that most have between 0 - 30,000 miles on them. The one shown in the picture in fact does have a rebuild tag and looks like a fresh rebuild. If rebuilt it should have this tag and several more and should look pristine.
The military doesn't rebuild them and store them looking like they just came out of a vehicle. I have seen over 50,000 or more of these sell thru the goverment auctions. Some groups as low as $40.00 per engine in the crates groups of 24 at a time. Less if bought just on pallets or loaded into an open top semi trailer. You will be lucky if you get 3 out of 10 that do not have main web cracks, thats about the average that the large rebuilders are getting from the groups that they have purchased. For most folks that are not towing heavy loads or rebuilding for more power this should not matter, the one in my suburban is cracked and has all kind of piston slop but just keeps on running. I have two blocks sitting in my junk pile out of military blazers that had below 20K on each and both have cracks even though the bores look like they were just honed and the internals look great but hate to build up a cracked block. Am saving up for a new block to start my rebuild project.
Not saying don't buy from him just be sure what you are getting... Saw 17,000 sell in one bunch. Another guy on e-bay has a whole warehouse full of them in TX for about $500 each.

Hope you get a good one

Thanks for all the information! Personally, if I were to buy one - I'd

personally pick one that had been rebuilt, and carefully inspect the block
write up a bill of sale that gives me a full right of exhange until I get one that reaches 1 year or 15,000 miles of service
If these guys own these engines for so little, they'd be crazy NOT to stand behind someone willing to plunk down $1000 each for a handpicked engine.
