My '93 6.5 has started shuttering and smoking alot since it got below 40F. Is this a glow plug problem? When I start it I let the glows fire, then it starts, but smokes and misses for about 15sec. Then is smooths out. This is my first diesel.
It's was rebuilt about 50,000mi ago, but I don't know what plugs are in it, etc.

Thanks

Could be a number of things, but the GPs are a good place to start. Try this the next time you have a cold start....Turn key to cycle the GPs. Once the lamp goes out, turn off the key for about 2 seconds. Turn key on again, then crank as soon as the GP lamp goes out. If it improves, the GPs aren't getting enough current, or the cycle is too short. If no change, check each GP for continuity and function. Pull the easiest plug and identify it. It helps to know which series you have installed.

It's only gonna get colder, so now is the time to get your starts starting.
