View Full Version : No start, no fuel; injection pump?

SES light came on while coming home from Cincinnati. Truck ran fine. Next morning, no start, no hit. Mechanic says no codes stored, no fuel to injectors. Mechanic works through his diagnosis sheet and diagnoses failed injector pump, specifically fuel solenoid. Does this make sense?

Do you have a spare FSD to try?

Noting its common to just blame the IP and replace the whole thing and usually don't fail all of a sudden.

I'd want to know exactly why he says the IP is bad if no DTC's and what diagnosis flow chart he is using. Post that back please I'd like to know what the official diagnosis flowchart is.

What I have done in the past is (ended up replacing FSD).

Verify fuel to IP first (LP and lines).
Ron's suggestion - Checked FSD OK but look at connections too = FSD and PCM
Check fuel shutoff solenoid operation
Check fuses
Battery connections (grounds)

Is that 192,000 miles on IP?

Ditto: SES on should be a code.
Sounds like Fuel Solenoid ( the silver thing on the
front of the pump ) should " Click " with Ign on..

Can you replace fuel solenoid?

Yes, I have read fuel shutoff solenoid is replaceable. I don't think GM sells it though they consider it part of the IP. Maybe another reason why they have changed so many IP's. A Stanadyne distributor should have it (if thats the problem).

IIRC its a normally closed solenoid power comes from ignition circuit and ground is supplied by ecm (read in another post). If the ECM is not happy with some inputs (FSD communication is one) it won't supply ground.

This sounds electronic. The injection pump won't fail over night. A failing PMD should give a cold start. I'd look at the fuses feeding the injection pump as well as the related harnesses. You know it's easy to over look the fuel filter as well.

See if one of the auto parts stores will read the codes.

some parts places do it for free
