My service engine light is on and The dealer checked it out and said its the relay for the glow plugs. They didnt have one in stock but the installed price is $350.00. My truck is a 02 and its out of warranty so the question is where can i purchase one and where is it located. Has anyone replaced one before and how difficult was it.

The relays are spendy, if you try to source them separately. You can replace the entire controller for less than the price of an individual relay from GM (and it will include the relay for the GPs and intake heater). Easy replacement, too. DIY and save big $$. The controller can be had from www.gmpartsdirect.com (http://www.gmpartsdirect.com) (couldn't find the controller, but the relay is $44.24) and www.rockauto.com (http://www.rockauto.com) (RA controller part# 1R1390, $97.79).

If you must have the dealer do it, ask about the cost of replacing the entire controller vs. just a relay.

It's the controller box looking thing above the driver's side valve cover at the rear. There's a picture of a CA model (different from Federal, but same location) in my Truck Stuff Pics link in my sig.

Before you start replacing stuff, you should confirm the relay/controller has actually failed. While they do fail on occasion, a bad glow plug will set the same code. Search the forum for DTC "P0381". Also, the intake heater and its relay can set the same code.

I had it at the dealer yesterday and they diagnosed it. They didnt have the part in stock so I told them i would bring it back at a later date. But now I'll just do it myself. Thanks again. You saved me $250.
