so i went outside this morning and the truck started good like normal, while i was driving it was fine but when i came to a stop sign it stalled:mad::mad:. it cranked a good 15 or 20 seconds then fired and drove fine. i got to my buddies house and when i stopped it started sputtering and stalled, now it won't start. the gauge says it has a half tank or so. so i think either the gage isn't working and it's out of fuel, or the fuel filter is plugged. i don't know when it was changed so i will do that anyway. but it wouldn't even fire off starting fluid. so do you guys think it's the fuel filter or out of fuel, or both, maybee the fuel pump:confused:. i havn't changed the muffler yet either, so i was thinking it might be plugged to. i know you guys can help me out. thanks again

Sounds like a stopped up fuel filter, renew this item and see if you get fuel purged through it, The fuel filter is located on the rear of your engine underneath the air cleaner housing.

Sorry John, you're not quite correct. On the '89, the fuel filter is the shiney, square thingy on the passenger side firewall. Only the '82s and '83s have the dual filter set-up on the firewall AND under the air cleaner. But yes, I would change that out first. I always have to remind myself to try the cheapest, simple stuff first.

Hello All,
allformike: if you stopped for fuel the night before it could be water. I have filled up the night before and found the next day it ran like crap and then quit. Either way I would say when you change the filter take the old one and turn upside down. Drain on a dry surface or in a bucket and the water should appear as river rock or drops if there is any other wise you should just see fuel.
hope this helps,
Don

i took off the fuel filter and drained it, nothing but fuel, so i checked all the fuel lines and found that the line coming from the tank into the engine had a small leak. i changed the hose and the filter and she perrs once again. thanks alot guys.:D

A K2500 would be the later 88+ body style, the classic body style that was in 1-tons (like 3+3 trucks) had the filter on the firewall. I was making a stab that it was the newer body style, which typically have it underneath the air cleaner.

the fuel filter was under the air cleaner on it, and it was a square shiney thing

My apologies to John and others. Dang it, just when I thought I knew everything, something else comes along! I'll update my brain database. I just hate it when they move those square, shiney thingys around so much.
Glad you found your problem Mike!

BTW, is it the very same square, shiney thingy filter that is on my '86 firewall?
