Thinking about upgrading to a 2003 D/A. All former owners of vehicles powered by the 6.5l engine know of the issues with that engine. The question here is; what are the issues that keep occurring with the 6.6l Duramax?

I see where the injectors can be a problem; Has the warranty been extended?

The quick answer is - unfortunately - there is no perfect truck.

The Duramax 6.6 is probably one of the best engines there is, arguably better or worse than Cummins. Much quieter, smoother, and starts better.

Personally, I'd want an 05 or later, because if ever the injectors go, you can stick new ones in without taking the valve covers off.

02-04.5's get the best mileage - inherent injector problems - most have warranty extensions for this to 7 years 200k.

05's like mine, have potential overheating problem under heavy load in hot weather, but this can be fixed with a V2 Rad mod. Injector connectors fail - easy fix. Very few other inherent problems.

06's are reliable, reputed to get lower fuel mileage, come with 6-speed allison, lots of power

07+ have particulate filter, etc, however not many reports of significant problems.
