my truck has a toggle switch on the 4x4 shifter casing. the guy i got it from said you need to flip the switch up to on, then the 4x4 will work. i did it and it worked fine, without the swith on it didn't work, so i went with it. but today i switched it on and the 4x4 case didn't light up like it did before. so my ? is what is hooked up to the switch so i know what to correct. oh ya, it is a shifter for the 4x4 if that helps. hope you guys can help me out with this one.

I'll take a stab at this one.

The year 4x4 you have has the independent front suspension (IFS) that has a solenoid (or sorts) that engages the differential to the front CVs, front wheels.

The electrical connection on the 4x4 shifter in the floor probably goes directly to the 4x4 actuator on the front differential.

Why they did this, I don't know specifically.

I'd trace the wires and see where the broken connection lies. Most times people do the electrical connections with crimp on butt connectors. Sometimes this works well, othertimes, the crimp doesn't work out. I always prefer the soldering iron and some good electrical tape or shrink wrap, or both.

Verify that you have power, at least on one side of the switch when the gear shifter is in 4x4.

Hope others that have had to work on the 4WD portion of their truck chime in.

My 4x4 never works, because the engine under the hood seldom works ;)

it was a simple fix, the fire that they had that sent power to the switch was broke at the switch, so i put a new end on it and it works great. thanks again
