Great timing for me on this, as my 03 @ 150,000 had been throwing the glow plug code the past couple months. This letter came in the mail today.

"This letter is to inform you that some 2003 Chevrolet Silverado vehicles, equipped with a 6.6L diesel V8 engine, and California emissions or Clean Fuel Fleet emissions, may experience a condition where the engine glow plugs may fail. this will cause illumination of the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL). ......"

General Motors is providing owners with additional protection for the engine glow plugs. If this condition occurs on your 2003 Chevrolet Silverado ... (LB7) and CA or Clean Fleet emissions, within 10 years or 200,000 miles,... the condition will be repaired for you at no charge. (Reimbursement also available for those who have paid for this repair.)

This is good news for those of us with 03 Ca emissions.

I hope they expand this to 2002s, too, as mine has had 4 glow plugs replaced in 80K miles and now the light is on again ...

So when I got home tonight I found my letter in the mailbox. It seems 2002s are covered as well, which implies that '01s and '04s will be, too.

Sweet.

From GM Info:

VEHICLES INVOLVED
Involved are certain 2002-04 model year Chevrolet Silverado; and GMC Sierra trucks, equipped with a 6.6L diesel V8 (LB7) engine, and California emissions (YF5/NE1), or Clean Fuel Fleet emissions (VCL) and built within the following VIN breakpoints:

Year Division Model From Through
2002 Chevrolet Silverado 2E100004 2E306366
2002 Chevrolet Silverado 2F100004 2F244420
2002 GMC Sierra 2E100046 2E305909
2002 GMC Sierra 2F100034 2F244422
2003 Chevrolet Silverado 3E100006 3E378716
2003 Chevrolet Silverado 3F100003 3F259024
2003 GMC Sierra 3E100066 3E381049
2003 GMC Sierra 3F100146 3F259028
2004 Chevrolet Silverado 4E100143 4E219578
2004 Chevrolet Silverado 4F100082 4F174734
2004 GMC Sierra 4E100062 4E221355
2004 GMC Sierra 4F100094 4F174119

So Federal emission trucks are not covered, nor are any 2001 trucks. The key is 2002-2004 model year with RPO codes of YF5, NE1 or VCL (which I have not heard of). (Note: NE1 codes are for Northeast States that have adopted California emissions).

Little behind in this forum but I was wondering if anyone could post a little more info concerning this topic. I have an '03 and glow plugs just started failing on me. 2 went out last week alone...six left. Before I pay for these myself, I would like to know if I am covered under this recall. My VIN falls within the range, but I have no idea what the RPO code is or where to find it. I called GM to ask and they told me there were no recalls on 2003 Chevy Silverados. Can anyone help???

Welcome aboard!

The RPO list is on a large sticker inside the glove box.
