View Full Version : serpentine setup on 82 block
will a serpentine accessory setup from a 91 6.2 truck bolt directly to a 82 block, or will it be missing mouting point??

Opto,
I don't know about what you ask but I am so tired of the v-belts on my '84, 6.2l n.a. van that I am ready to change out to serpentine.
Somewhere, I have seen a serpentine pulley kit for 6.2 engines but it cost around $200.00 U.S.
If you find out anything that you don't post on here, please let me know and I will do likewise.
Thanks
Joe

You'll need a CCW water pump made to work with the serpentine system. The V-belt water pump turns CW as you face the engine, and it'll spin backwards with the serp system - greatly reducing its flow capacity.
Your air conditioning compressor won't work with the serp brackets, and you may need to update the alternator and power steering pump.
If going to serpentine, I recommend the 1988-95 components. Simpler- lighter weight, and the various belt-driven accessories are usually less expensive.

I do understand about the different rotations
I'll try to clarify the question a bit
I have a 91 truck with serpentine setup, I am about to rebuild the engine
I would like to change the block to a 82 block for two reasons, one the strength of the high nickel block and two being able to work on it before pulling the engine of the truck which means less downtime.
My concern is if all the serpentine accessories from my 91 will fit directly to the 82 block or if the newer block has mounting points that the 82 block doesn't have
I have an 83 block with unknown year heads that I'm in the process of mocking up a Banks turbo with a 95 G van serp belt drive in a 85 3500 . All the brackets/mounts bolt up to the block and heads . Only problem that I can think of may be where you get your oil feed for the turbo and if you are swapping heads , the coolant port may need the plug kit for the earlier year block .
I'm swapping in new 6.5 heads with felpro 6.5 gaskets
Which coolant port do you refer to?

It'll work fine. It'll bolt right up and everything else will too.

I believe it was the early 6.2 heads the had a passage that had to be plugged when swapping them to later blocks .

I have an '82 block with a 95 serpentine setup. It works great.

Tell us more, Blazr, such as how much did it cost for the conversion parts, what did you do about the a/c and reverse rotation waterpump?
Thanks

I got all the brackets and some extra parts from a guy in phoenix with a diesel shop and lots of spare parts. It was $300 for an oil pan, timing cover, all the brackets and pulleys, an alternator and a powersteering pump. I then bought the dual thermostat housing conversion from the Diesel depot for I think another $300. I could have got a used pump from the other guy for free, but wanted new. I think I just got lucky and found some cheap stuff. Other than that I looked at pictures to see how it should go together and then threw it on mine. Have had no real problems with it, that I did not cause. I lost an alernator bracket he gave me, so I made my own out of the old alternator bracket. One day the alternator broke off while I was driving down the freeway. The small brackt broke and then the alternator housing broke in half. That was interesting and I learned my lesson.
If you are in AZ and want the guys number I think I still have it, however, it was a while back so there are no guarentees he is still there.

???? I still don't understand the need or desire to switch to one belt driving everything. I know sometimes the v-belts can be a p.i.t.a when they loosen or squeel, but to depend on only one belt to keeping everything running, it scares me. I had the p.s belt shred on me once but that is all I lost, a little strong arm steering and brakes but it never overheated, never lost charging ability, or anything detrimental to the running of my truck. Drop an alt. belt and same thing, still drivable in "emergency mode" but that's just me. All the belts for my 85 cost around 24 bucks a year. Kind of cheap all things considered. Maybe I'm just old fashioned and stuck in my ways but my two cents for what it's worth.........

You can carry just one spare and not worry about losing anything. It is much easier to change also.

Thanks for the info, Blzr.
Could you tell me exaclty what parts from the '82 block, that you were able to use? Did you use the a/c compressor, alternator, power steering pump water-pump backing plate from the '82?
Jim (Morepower) said that I need a reverse rotation pump and if that is all, it would be no problem for me to go to serpentine.
