Semi-interested in a low mileage early 80's half ton 2wd with a 6.2L and 3 speed + OD manual trans. Anybody know what sort of trans this might be?
I'm figuring it's a plain jane stocker as it came from the government.

What sort of gas mileage can one of these get? I know the 4x4's can do 20 with OD but what about the 2wd's?

Thoughts/concerns/worries/advice?

Should be the SM465, eh? I thought that was all that GM had for diesels with an O/D

Oh, forgot to add. Buddy has a 1983 6.2 w/ SM465, 2Wd. Has the overdrive as well. It's currently apart for body work,, but when on the road it was getting mid20's+ with 3.08 gearing

Well...uhmmm...I know for sure the SM465 has no OD gear. Granny low but no OD gear. 3rd (the 4th gear) is 1:1.

Aparently it should be a A-833. Not an offroad or tow rig trans but apparently good enough for a 2wd DD.

three speed with overdrive in the early 80 p/u was a A833 Chrysler trans with a external hurst shift on the side like a car four speed. This is a car trans good for mileage but not so good for pulling. The biggest headache for this trans is parts for the thing are very rare. When checking it out--check the fluid in the case--IT is AUTO TRANSMISSION FLUID--not normal gear lube .
