View Full Version : Widening front wheels 1" on inside to accomodate 275/70-16 tires

I have a 2002 3500 dually and I'm currently running BFG 235/85-16s all around. I'd like to step up to 275/70-16s on the front, and in order to do so, I'd need to have my 2 front steel wheels widened 1". I'd like to do it towards the inside and it looks like I'll clear the brakes, etc.

The rolling diameter of a 235/85-16 tire is 31.7" and a 275/70-16 is 31.2". I don't think that 0.5" difference is going to matter, especially not since I'd only engage 4x4 in slick conditions anyway.

I have a Warn M15000 on the front of the truck, so this already front heavy truck is even heavier and I'm constantly wearing out my front tires, so I'd like some more meat up there. I also sink down in muddy terrain pretty quickly, so moving up to a 275 would really help I think.

Anyone ever done something like this before. Any issues I should be aware of before proceeding?

If you're planning to run wider wheels, I recommend maintaining the same backspacing ratio as the stock wheels. For example, a 1" wider wheel would produce a wheel that adds 1/2" to the outside and 1/2" to the inside. This helps with driveability (helps prevent wandering, pulling right or left, etc.)
