I have a 98 gmc 3500 hd wrecker with a nv4500 and I don't have any 5th gear, I just got her running the other day and when I took it for a test drive I had no 5th gear, it doesn't grind omake any noise what so ever, it's just like you put it in nutral, all the other gears work fine with no noise at all, I remove the side cover and there was no shavings or broken gears or any thing that I could see that would cause this, the trans is clean as can be inside, is there any one out there that has had this proplem or could give me any sugistions? I would hate to pull this trans if I don't need to, thanks every one.....dlg44

visit quad4x4 dot com and look at thier tech support and "King Torque" ??? 5th gear fix.

I have read its a common problem on the Dodge trucks not so common on the gm version.

The nut holding 5th gear loosens and the gear slides back and won't engage.

5th gear is in the tailshaft assembly and not in the main case. If I remember correctly you should just be able to remove the tail shaft but I will check futher for You.
5th gear also fails fairly often in trucks that pull or haul heavy loads.

Unfortunately I can't find my pic's of a torn down NV4500. The only thing that really sticks in my mind is that the torque value for the main nut is quite high. Without my diagrams I can't remember what goes where.

Sorry

Try this link for diagrams and info for the NV4500. http://eautorepair.net/

The nut can and does come loose on the main shaft and the small gear walks back and no more go. I can post some pics tomorrow when it is light out. I have my box out and apart now. There is an upgrade replacement nut to cure this.

5th gear is external to the main gear box. There is an aluminum cover on the rear of the main box. The bolts a loc tighted in and you need to use a good 12 point socket to break them loose. You can probably fix it without removing the aluminum cover. Try Drivetrain.com for parts. Dave knows his transmissions and is a wealth of knowledge. They have good stock of parts and ship when they say they will.;)
