In another thread awhile back, I mentioned that the PO replaced the clutch line on my truck before I bought it - literally, right before I bought it. When I went to test drive it the line fractured. So he replaced it, I went back a second time to test drive it, and then bought it.

Right now I have everything apart to replace the clutch (and a few other things while I am in there). Based on the way the clutch line is fastened to the top of the bellhousing, can you really replace the clutch line from the engine compartment? That is the way the factory manual seems to say to do it. But looking at it, I'm almost thinking you'd have to drop the transmission and go in from the back...

Part of the reason I ask is I think that is the way the PO did it and explains some of the issues that I am having now. I cannot imagine going to the trouble of dropping the transmission to replace the line unless it is near impossible any other way.

I helped my girlfriend's dad replace his clutch line. He has a '95 Chevy, 5.0 gasser and I think it's a goofy Getrag tranny. Anyhow, his setup includes an external slave cylinder so I'd expect you're looking at the same situation.

Yes, the line is replaced by working from above in the engine compartment. It can be a real pain working next to the firewall, but if you have a ratcheting box wrench with a tilting head you should be able to make short work of it.

Just to be clear, the clutch line goes through clamps that are bolted onto the top two bellhousing bolts on the back of the engine... Is that the same setup on the gasser?

Yep, same setup.

Have to take a closer look at things from the engine compartment... Certainly not an easy task in any light.
