View Full Version : Gear drive set up
I'm installing my geardrive
In the instructions it shows the timing marks on the gears tooth, but on my gears they aren't on the tooth
Although they seem to line up pretty good
Any thoughts??

Hmmmm
That mark looks like it was sloppily placed to me.
I would be very sure of this before I buttoned that thing back up.
I am currious as to whether the mark should be on the tooth or between the two???
Call the Manufacture and ask them about that just to be safe.
Too bloody much work to rip it apart if it is not right.

Opto,
When I installed my gear set on the 84, That's what I remember them looking like. It's been 3+ years since I installed them.

Like Hammer said, the mark on the cam gear isn't lined up with a tooth. That's how all the gear drives are. Set a straight-edge on the crank at 12:00 and center the top of straight-edge with the cam bolt hole. The timing marks on the gear(s) should line up. ;)

I just did the Phazer gear drive on my Tahoe and thanks to Jims help to upload the pictures.
Picture I have shows the dots before I installed the reluctor. I also included a picture of the fluiddamper.

Thanks, that looks exactly the same
I was also looking into getting a fluiddampr since it looked like the damper was in a very early stage of degrading, but since they were out of stock at summit of the 6.2 version and in order to get it fast enough the shipping would be $200+ I decided to replace it later
I've now finished the job.
New IP 4911 with I think 6,2 governor
New injectors
New glow plugs
New hummer intake, instead of the old with EGR
removed the vaccum pump
New racor filter with pressure gauge, dumped the old intake mounted filter
and of course the geardrive, the chain was really worn
Now it runs really strong, a huge difference from before
I still haven't had time to set the timing yet, I only aligned the marks
It runs surprisingly strong for having almost 340 000 km on the odometer
The banks turbo tops out att 11 psi
I do think maybe the comression is low on some cylinders, it seems to run a little uneven on idle
